Health Guidelines...Please Read
Dear Parents,
Keeping our school healthy is very important! Although we want our students in school when they are well, we do have a few guidelines for those times when they are ill.
1. All children should be kept home for a full 24 hours after symptoms of illness have subsided.
2. If your child has a temperature of 100 degrees or above, vomits or has diarrhea during the evening or night, DO NOT send your child to school the next day.
3 With the recent outbreak of swine flu, it is more important than ever to help protect our students. It is extremely important to notify the school office with any diagnosis of this flu. If you have been to Mexico in the last 3 weeks or been in contact with anyone who has been to Mexico recently, please notify the school office if you or someone close to you becomes ill. In response to the intensifying outbreak, the World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 5. WHO says the phase 5 alert means there is sustained human to human spread in at least two countries. It also signals that efforts to produce a vaccine will be ramped up.
4. What You Can Do to Stay Healthy - There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. If you get sick, the CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
5. What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans? The symptoms are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
We need your help by not only reporting your child's absence, but by telling us what symptoms your child has. If the student population exceeds the normal absentee rate by 20% (for the same condition), we must report the illness to the Kansas City Health Department and follow their guidelines.
At St. Patrick, we have taken extra steps to help kids stay healthy by cleaning commonly touched surfaces such as door handles, hand railing, drinking fountains, sink handles, and desks more frequently. We continue to encourage hand washing and other good health habits.
